Well, here it is - a reworked website.
So what's so great about it? Well, truth be told, it's not a jaw-droppingly beautiful state-of-the-art vision of the future. I don't think the club wanted or needed that. I've tried to keep the layout fairly similar to the previous site, because I know a lot of people, myself included, very much liked the old website.
It doesn't yet have loads of new content either. No, but it will have all the old content, and it will have new material as well as additional functionality going forward.
So we know what it isn't... what DOES it do for the club?
It's all about sustainability. Tony was wanting to step back, and nobody else was frantically waving their arms in the air. I've been there before. I'm sure Tony had a lot of fun over the years, but I think he said he's been doing it for 8 or 9 years, and that's long enough for anyone. He was obviously doing the newsletter last year as well. Too much.
This website sits on a platform called Joomla. It's like a fancy dynamic website hosting environment. It's known as a Content Management System, or CMS and it does what it says on the tin. It's free and open source. It's well supported and has been for many years - and it works. Almost too good to be true. Best of all, I've used it before and I know the basics. I'm not an expert, and I don't code in any of these languages, but I can get by.
As the Joomla development team so eloquently put it: "A content management system is software that allows you to create and manage webpages easily by separating the creation of your content from the mechanics required to present it on the web".
That'll do for us.
If you've visited the website before, hopefully it'll look fairly familiar in layout for all it's differences in style.
It won't contain a newsletter though. Those individual articles will be integrated into one of the menu items - such as News or Feature Articles.
Joomla allows relatively straightforward global changes to the look and feel using 'templates', but I'm going for functional first. It's like many things in life these days - the more you customise them, the more trouble it is when it comes time to upgrade.
And upgrading is an absolute must when it comes to websites; particularly with respect to security.
Well, that's enough for now. I'll be transferring more and more of the old content over in the coming weeks and then I'll have a rest before breaking new ground. That ground will hopfully involve showing some of you folks how to add content to the website yourselves!

The Hounds gathered in Cyprus road car park for this, the last RDF outing of 2019.
The teams comprised of:
Kim G7AIE
Russell G7TMR
The Satellites:
Peter G4AKG, Mike G8KMP, Tony G3XQM.
and Mervyn M0WVE

The first transmission from the Fox's Lair was at 7.30pm BST, and lasted for a duration of 2 minutes.
As the nights were closing in, all transmissions were 10 minutes apart, and all further transmissions were of 1 minute duration.
Copy based upon Alan and Stella's hand out with much appreciation.
From the start the signals were quite strong and appeared to be coming from a southerly direction.

The satellite Team took a long time to find the foxes. We had a feeling that the signals were emanating from around Ditchling, although the signal levels were not as strong as we thought they should be.
Then Mike had a brain wave - the penny dropped. We had been there before, on a different occasion.
The Car Park at St John the Baptist's Church Underhill Lane Clayton.
Refreshments at the Jack and Jill Inn, polished off an enjoyable evening.

Congratulations to Russell, the Winner of the RDF event

On Friday last (9th Aug) we held our Treasure Hunt.
This was hosted by Alan and Stella, who decided to revive a format that had been used many years previously hence turning it into a Measure Hunt.
The idea being that even if you got back in the shortest time, and had answered all the questions correctly, collected all the random bits asked for along the way, you may still not be the winner of the Hunt.

We had five teams that took part - they were:-
1) Kim G7AIE & Sue G6YPY
2) Mike G8KMP, Tony G3XQM & Peter G4AKG
3) Russell G7TMR & Val XYL
4) Mike G1TDL & Sue XYL
5) Del 2E0KDL & family

Once each team had given the mileage reading to Alan prior to leaving Cyprus Hall carpark, it was then entirely up to each team, which way round they went, visiting the four locations marked on the maps, prior to meeting back at the finishing point (The Acorn) at the Premier Inn Burgess Hill, by Tesco's

We had set five questions in or around each location, plus there was one final one just as you came in through the doors of the pub from the carpark.

While Alan & Stella sorted the marking on the spreadsheet, all those that took part had a well deserved drink or two, some even shared some crisps and lovely they were too.

The team in 1st place was:-
Kim G7AIE & Sue G6YPY.
Followed by
Russell G7TMR & Val XYL,
Mike G8KMP, Tony GXQM & Peter G4AKG.
Del 2E0KDL & family.
Mike G1TDL & Sue XYL.
N.B.Sue and Kim won the treasure hunt by just one point from Russell and Val - Ed.

The 1st placed team won with 65 points and the 5th team came in with 45 points. Everyone appeared to have had a good time, although we thought maybe the next one could be on a Sunday morning ending at a pub for lunch. Perhaps you could send some feedback to the chairman letting him know if you would like to try this out? We used to do it many, many years ago, perhaps we could try this again.
